This directory contains:

Mailchk and MailCall were written by Chris McNeil (cjm@unb.ca).

Mailchk is a udp based unix daemon that works with Mac POPmail II (version
2.02a or later) and MailCall.  MailCall is a small (70k RAM) background
only-application that queries the Mailchk daemon every 4 minutes to ask
if new mail has arrived.  If there is any new mail, MailCall will
rotate the Apple icon with a small envelope icon using Notification
Manager until the Mac user fetches the mail using POPmail.

You can only (currently) use MailCall and mailchk if your mail server
is a unix machine.  You cannot use it with MailStop servers.

1.  Open mailchk.c and edit the line: 

 char *MAILCK ="/bin/grep -c '^From ' /usr/mail/.

so that the path of grep and the mail spool directories are correct for
your machine.

2.  To install mailchk, make mailchk and move it to /usr/local/etc/ or some
other convenient location.  Put the following line in /etc/services file
mailchk         2371/udp

Put a line similar to the  following  in /etc/inetd.conf file
mailchk dgram   udp     wait    root    /usr/local/etc/mailchk

3.  Then restart  inetd by kill -1 process id


4.  Using MailCall.
Start up POPmail and fetch your mail.  This will create a settings file
for MailCall to use when checking for mail.

For System 6 (with MultiFinder) users, place the MailCall application
somewhere on your hard disk.  Select it and make it the startup
application (Set Startup menu item under Special menu).  

For System 7, drop the MailCall application into the Startup Items
folder within the System Folder.

In either case, restart your Mac to get MailCall going.
