You need two (or more) network interfaces, in order to experiment.
I used, in the past, PPP over serial cable and PLIP over parallel
cable, both supported in muLinux.

As alternative, you can use the localhost 127.0.0.1 as additional
dummy interface: I think routing mechanism, IP filtering etc also
apply in this case.
