established serial connection, but no remote login...

hello
this mail is going to both small linux team and mulinux mailing list, because
i have a sort of hybrid system : )

i hope you have an answer to this one:
on my 386sx/4mg ram laptop i have small linux installed, including the
modules and net200 package.

i have also added some binaries and deamons from mulinux, since on the small
linux site it says they are usable. i haven't had problems with them so far.

now:
on my other pc (decent enough) i have installed suse 7.3. when i link them
with a null-modem cable, i can connect them the way it is described in the
Serial-Laplink-Howto. the way described on the small linux site (using slip
scripts) does not work with my suse 7.3 somehow...
anyway, i am getting a ping:

dce:~ # ping small

dce:~ #

where "small" is the laptop and "dce" the biggy. ping works from either side.

i can login via ssh from the laptop to the pc, but not vice versa.

1. #ssh dce
        root@dce"s password:
        Last login: Mon Feb 18 10:58:27 2002 from small.local
        dce:~#

2. dce:~ # ssh small
      Secure connection to small refused.
      dce:~ #

i cannot login via telnet, ftp or rsh on either side.
for example
1. dce:~ # ftp small
    Connected to small.local.
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection.
    ftp>
(what's 421 service?)

2. #ftp dce
    ftp: connect: Connection refused
    ftp>

(this looks similar for the other apps.)

i have never linked two computers before. i noticed that on dce there is a
"sshd" deamon, but i coudn't find this binary in any mulinux package.
(checked: SRV EXT WKS USR)

i know that ssh somehow renders telnet unusable (don't ask me how). i have
inetd running on both my computers.

thanks
stefan
