Familiar v0.6

[Introduction]

Familiar v0.6 is now released. If you find bugs, add them to the FamiliarDistribution wiki page. If you're feeling ambitious, you can report them to Handhelds.org Bugzilla. Here is a handy link for creating a Familiar v0.6 bug report if you have trouble deciphering which component to submit a bug report against.

Supports H3100, H3600, H3700, and H3800.

We plan to add Jornada 56x support in v0.7

Although we have begun porting Linux to the H3900, there is nothing ready yet. See H3900 Linux port status page for details.

This release has many changes over the v0.5.x series.

[Changes From 0.5 To v0.6]

ipkg: ipkg supports Provides, Conflicts, and Replaces now, as well as checking dependences before removing packages.
busybox: This release uses busybox for more compact basic linux utilities. This space savings enables us to make compact bootstrap images containing either basic X or opie.
opie: This release contains opie as one of the graphical interface choices.
gpe: gpe is a gtk-based pda software suite for the iPAQ, written from scratch.
non-root logins: GPE's X display manager (gpe-dm) and login manager enable creation and usage of non-root user accounts.
bluez updates: Updated to bluez 2.x snapshot

[Obtaining Familiar v0.6]

See the [installation guide] for instructions on installing Familiar on the iPAQ H3600, H3700, or H3800 series. The iPAQ H3900 series is not supported.

[Upgrading to Familiar v0.6 from Familiar v0.5.3]

See the upgrade instructions to upgrade from Familiar v0.5.3 to Familiar v0.6.

[Errata]

The version number in the boot images remains at v0.6-rc1. If you "ipkg update;ipkg upgrade" as the installation instructions tells you, the version number and ipkg sources will be fixed.
xcalibrate really ought to be run on the very first boot. When you create the first user, run xcalibrate with the 'Record' button.
Some people report that sometimes their machine will suspend, but will never resume. Have to reboot to recover from that situation. Some people have reported that pressing the power button frantically will resume the machine.
